I have long been meaning to hire a metal detector and have a search through our wood for buried Treasure. So this week being half term and with grandchildren to entertain I rented two detectors for the week. Two??? well it was a bit of a cock up on my behalf with the ordering but as I said when trying to wriggle out of the situation… probably for the best then both grandchildren could each have their own detector and save them getting bored.
Well we soon made a find it was a jar of Ponds Cold cream complete with metal top and it gave a good signal and was easy to find…just below the surface. This was Freya’s find

I had not realised that this product is still available and evidently there is quite a resurgence in its use… retro cosmetics!
Then Alex and Nanny found a long piece of what looked like fencing wire.
After that not much. Some good signals and at one place I dug a hole about 25 cm deep and still getting a signal but nothing found. I will revisit and dig down even deeper.
Lots of little signals, I think some of the rocks might contain iron deposits??? could that set it off.
Then a good strong signal and it was a modern nut off some machinery, not very corroded.

Finally a sort of squashed can with what might be an electrode sticking out the top, maybe an old battery.
If you have any ideas or suggestions then let me know. I will be back for an extended search at the weekend.

Just hope it wasn’t an area bombs were dropped in during the war. Amelia
Well only if they were way off target. Nearest place worth bombing was Newport, probably 30 miles away.
Often the planes had to drop them to return to base so let’s hope you were not on the return leg.
Hi I put a better photo of it on a local group FB page that is interested in Local and industrial history and a good suggestion is that it was an acetylene carbide lamp as used by miners. I have looked at photos of ones that are intact and what I have does look like it could be a remnant of something similar.
how exciting! what a wonderful thing to do with your grand children, well done! And I didn’t know you could hire metal detectors, I’ve long wanted to join my local club but couldn’t afford a detector – so thank you for that info. Good hunting!
Well it would have been more exciting if we had found a gold torc…. but hey ho. The hire company was https://www.inlec.com/mechanical-testing/metal-detector-hire?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIsL_Ly8rI4AIVq53tCh05FwIjEAAYASAAEgJebvD_BwE and it is a good way to try out metal detecting.
