Rain, wind and sun continues, with some very sharp downpours and then quite warm sun, sort of April weather, as it used to be.

Lots of acorns down, with a high proportion of them still green but they a large and plump so I think they would still germinate as long as they avoid being eaten which 99.9% will not.

I have been looking out for fungi now the ground is a little more moist. Having said that I transplanted a Cotoneaster from the garden up to the wood and dug a hole for it. The first 4-5 inches were wet then the soil became dry and by the time I was down to 6-7 inches it was so dry that as I removed it from the hole there was actually dust blowing into the air. So maybe not so good for the fungi yet.

And so it has proved to be, midweek there were some fungi around but very few.

However by the end of the week there were fungi everywhere, predominantly Brown Roll Rims Paxillus, but also lots of others including one large patch of Penny Buns, some of which are now being dried out to provide dried Porcini for the winter. In fact it was Sunday when I saw the large numbers so strictly speaking that should be part of next weeks report.

What did happen this week was on Wednesday when I was privileged to watch two Roe Deer  gently working their way through the woods, largely browsing on Bramble leaves. One of them made a brief sortie into the open where I was able to get some reasonable shots.

So that was the wood this week.
